A Capitol Fourth of July
If you are lucky enough to be in Washington for the Fourth of July, there are some definite "must do's." If you are a first-time visitor to DC, you have to see the fire works on the National Mall. Every year, there is a musical performance on the Mall followed by fireworks. The fireworks display is simply wonderful! This year, actor Jimmy Smits hosts the star-studded event that will include performances by American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, rock leged Jerry Lee Lewis and acclaimed broadway actor Brian Stokes Mitchell. The performances will begin at 8p.m. The event will also be televised on PBS from 8 to 9:30 p.m.
Please note, the closest metro station, Smithsonian, will be closed on July 4. The closest stations that will operate on the 4th are Metro Center, Gallery Place, Judiciary Square, Federal Triangle and L'Enfant Plaza.
Here are a few tips if you are going to the Mall:
1) GET THERE EARLY! You may want to arrive a few hours early just to secure a seat on the Mall. The Mall is literally filled with people so you need to plan ahead or you will be standing during the performances and during the fireworks display.
2) COME PREPARED! You may want to think about bringing a blanket to sit on and an ample supply of water so you can deal with the heat. You also may want to bring some snacks as well.
3) BE PATIENT! The metros will be packed and there will be people everywhere, so please be patient and prepared to wait in long lines.
However, if you decide to stay near home, there are a ton of other July 4th activities in DC area neighborhoods. For a county by county guide, please visit:
