A Walk Back in Time.

Most people think of Singapore as a modern day phenomenon, a vibrant city-state that rose from nothing to become a modern metropolis. And they are correct.

There is though a certain amount of the ‘old Singapore' still to be seen...once you seek...and subsequently find.

One of the best areas for seeing much of the original up close and personal would be Katong.

Located in the East Coast the district is described as a melting pot of Peranakan (Straits Chinese), Eurasian, Malay, Indian and Chinese cultures. Here you can shop, eat and explore a part of Singapore that remains varied, original and charming.

In the early 19th century Katong was filled with coconut plantations.

Atap-rooved kampungs (villages) were everywhere and life drifted by at a leisurely pace.

Fast forward to the 1950s and the area had become a pleasant seaside retreat for the wealthy. Elegant in many ways, classy and natural throughout.

Bungalows, shop-houses and places of worship from the time are still in evidence with over 700 Katong buildings still standing ‘as was', thanks to conservation.

Check out the following as you stroll the district:-

*            Property at 150 East Coast Road --- beautiful terraced houses.

*            Katong Village - 86 East Coast Road.

This former Police Station is now appealing shops and restaurants.

*          Try the Peranakan Inn food and while you're there check the Katong Antiques House next door - both just past the Church of the Holy Family.

*            Koon Seng Road shophouses - architecture to take your breath away.

*          The Indian temple along Ceylon Road and the numerous restaurants along East Coast Road between Joo Chiat and Still Road.

Make sure you take your camera as all of this really is the original Singapore.

Don't miss it!
