After the Red Carpet Goes into Hibernation
Anchoring the Hollywood & Highland retail center, TV viewers throughout the world recognize the Kodak Theatre as the place where celebrities in their designer finery ("who are you wearing?") work the red carpet on approach to the annual Academy Awards ceremony. Until the theater opened in 2001, the awards (and the moveable carpet) were held at various sites including the adjacent world-famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Now the gilded celebrities have a glittery permanent home with true movie-star accoutrements such as a grand entrance, five-story lobby with a sweeping, spiral-shaped staircase (watch those trains, ladies!), and the 3,500-seat "tiara-capped," "audience chamber" that is ashimmer with flattering (of course) and dramatic lighting, has glorious acoustics, and boasts a behemoth main stage. But, don't despair; even mere mortals can enjoy the innards of this palatial venue. Throughout the year the Kodak hosts world-renowned international performers that have included Prince, Barry Manilow, Melissa Etheridge, and the Dixie Chicks. Refreshments--including fine wines, and specialty cocktails--are provided at Wolfgang Puck-owned concessions on each lobby level. In addition, guided walking tours are available seven days a week (subject to performance schedules) where you can experience the grandiose surroundings, ogle fine architectural details, and even view an authentic Oscar statuette in the exclusive George Eastman VIP Room. By the way, the Kodak Theatre is available for rent should you need a very impressive place to throw an event.
