Balboa Park Gardens

Balboa Park has 1,200 acres of beautifully manicured gardens. Travellers will witness aesthetic beauty, and have exquisite photographic backdrops.

There are dozens of gardens at Balboa Park.  However, if you are pressed for time, I recommend that you at least visit the following gardens:

· The Botanical Building
· Casa del Rey Moro Garden
· Japanese Friendship Garden
· Zorro Garden
· Alcazar Garden

The Botanical Building and its adjacent Lily Pond is one of the top sites to see while in San Diego.  On an international scale, this historic building is one of the largest, which houses ferns, orchids, palms and a flurry of tropical plants.

The inspiration of Casa del Rey Moro Garden was from the Moorish Gardens in Ronda, Spain. The garden is lovely, as is its building, the House of Hospitality.

The Japanese Friendship Garden is said to have been created from a teahouse dated back in 1915.  This harmonious garden features a Zen garden, koi pond, wisteria arbor, and bonsai exhibit.

The Zorro Garden, constructed as a deep-set stone grotto, once served as a nudist colony in the 1930s.  Now, this site houses a butterfly garden, and visitors are awed by not only these colorful species, but also with the vibrant perennials and ficus trees.

The Alcazar Garden in Balboa park is reminiscent of the Alcazar Garden in Seville, Spain.  It is adorned with elaborate fountains, colorful Moorish tiles, and various luminous flowers.

Enjoy the gardens!
