Best Airport Food

  • News

The other day an old friend of mine were trying to sort out a time to meet up with each other during his business trip to the city. We decided to meet up at the airport for lunch before his flight out. Why? Because there's good food there now.

Airport food has come a very long way. Where I used to eat before I got to the airport, I now get there earlier so I can have a meal before I head out. I have flown out of every airport in London and I definitely have my picks on where I like to fuel up before a flight.

Here are my picks for the best airport food for the five major London airports:

Plane Food (Heathrow Airport, Terminal 5)

When Gordon Ramsay extended his brand to Heathrow's brand spanking new Terminal 5 last year, it was one of the most hotly anticipated airport restaurant launches to date. This is probably the only airport restaurant with which I've actually made a reservation. Once you tuck into the foie gras and chicken liver parfait, followed by the Casterbridge rib eye steak, ,it's really hard to be satiated by the chicken or the beef options offered by your flight attendant.

Brasserie Chez Gerrard (Gatwick Airport)

A good old fashioned French brasserie at Gatwick airport? Get outta here. Well it is part of the Chez Gerrard chain so it's technically not that old fashioned. You cannot deny, however, that the steak frites accompanied by a glass of house red is the best way to get yourself ready for your long haul flight.

Est Bar (Luton Airport)

This is the spot to have a nice glass of pinot grigio and a plate of antipasti before that ridiculously cheap discount flight to Berlin. You won't be fed on the plane, and you spent so little on the flight. Why not splurge a little?

Caviar House Seafood Bar (Stansted Airport)

Stansted is the home of discount airline Ryanair, so if you're coming here, chances are you've paid just the taxes on your flight. With all the money you saved, you really can afford a little caviar, an oyster or two and a glass of champers before you board.

Bar Ten28 (London City Airport)

If you're lucky enough to be flying out of the city airport, chances are you're a frequent flier. The best antidote to all the rich food you eat while travelling? A delicious and semi-healthy chicken, avocado and bacon salad washed down with a glass of the Sancerre white.
