Convention Traffic
Two new articles about the Democratic Convention paint a grim picture for convention goers not staying within walking distance of the Pepsi Center and Invesco Field.
This article basically says that all roads and all light rail to and from the Pepsi Center will be closed. If you have a hotel in the central business district, wear comfortable shoes. If you are outside of the business district, I don't know what to tell you. I imagine there are probably shuttle buses from many remote hotels to the Pepsi center, but you should probably enquire with your hotel. You can also take the light rail to the central business district and walk it, but it might be as much as a mile away.
As for Invesco/ Mile High Field, this article says that all parking lots will be closed for Obama's acceptance speech. It does not mention if there will be RTD light rail service, however, the light rail station is accross from the I-25 highway, far enough that it is unlikely that it will be considered a security risk.
Sadly, this situation is starting to look like the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. I was an Atlanta resident and a volunteer for the Olympics, and I witnessed the chaos that resulted from an inadequate transportation plan that relied too heavily on public transportation. This plan seems almost worse in that it excludes Denver's light rail system, the backbone of it's public transportation system.
Now, I am no security expert, but it does seem rather unlikely that terrorist could hijack a train, and if so, where would they take it?
