Dim Sum Anyone?

  • News
  • Thursday, September 25, 2008

I have always been a bit curious to try dim sum, which I equate to Spanish tapas, but have never gotten around to it.  "Dim sum" literally means dot the heart and I guess that's exactly what little snacks do--just a dot here and there.

There are a few things to know aobut dim sum before you try it--there are two types Cantonese and Shanghai.  The Cantonese style is more common with steamed dumplings and lots of stuff rolled up in dough. The Shanghai style usually has fare that includes beef stew noodles.

However, I have recently heard about some great spots to try it.  Here are a few:

1) China Garden--This place is located in Arlington, VA.  This place only serves Cantonese style dim sum and is only open on weekends morning and early afternoons. Servers will come around to you with their carts so you can make your selections. Here are some recommendations--try the beef meatballs and the steamed buns filled with pork.  This place is also quite large so feel free to invite friends. 1100 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA

2) Oriental East-- This place is located in Silver Spring, MD.  This place also serves Cantonese dim sum and has a great variety of items to choose from.  From what I hear, try anything that is seafood and wrapped in something.  This place has been around a long time so you are sure to find something you like. 1312 East-West Highway, Silver Spring, MD

3) A & J's--This place is also located in Maryland, Rockville to be exact.  Hoewver, A & J's specializes in Shanghai-styled dim sum.  Steamed short ribs are recommended as a starter.  A & J's has two locations and also tends to be easy on the wallet.  They also offer some "exotic" items such as preserved egg with tofu.  1319 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD

Happy Dim Sum!
