Double-Whammy Music
Summer is full on in Barcelona. The beaches are packed, as are the sidewalk and plaza cafes. All over the city people have their windows open, sipping cool drinks and taking it easy. Barcelona’s music scene is good all year long, but gets down right extraordinary in the summer months. The best part of Barcelona’s musical offering is that there’s something for everybody. This week, those who want to experience some more traditional Spanish music should check out the Òpera I Flamenc Ensamble De L’Orquestra at the La Palau de la Musica. This is a combo of Flamenco music/dance accompanied by an orchestra in the city’s most gorgeous Modernista theater. La Palau de la Musica is worth a visit on its own just to glimpse its budding rosette flanked columns and its nostril-flaring Pegasus’ flying up from the stage (it’s quite a work of art, this theater). Here you have the chance to get a cultural double-whammy, with the Palau’s Modernista architecture and Spanish Flamenco music. Of course, Flamenco is not from Catalonia, but from the south of Spain, so seeing this dramatic dance may only be possible at a theater like the Palau (in the south there are lots of Flamenco bars).
