Fabulous Fullerton.
The Fullerton Hotel is one of Singapore's great hotel properties. Standing at the mouth of the Singapore River the hotel has a history as long as the city-state.
When Stamford Raffles founded Singapore in 1829 he built Fort Fullerton on the present site of the hotel of the same name. In 1928 a new construction took shape on the site and was named the Fullerton Building.
Once home to the Chamber of Commerce, the Singapore Club and the General Post Office - positioned in a perfect location from which to pass mail to waiting boats who then transported letters and parcels to the four corners of the world - the building took on its present incarnation as a 400 room hotel on the first day of January 2001, after a SIN$400 million refit.
The pale grey hotel stands as a monument to Palladian architecture with numerous columns and arches providing a recognisable presence on the skyline of the city.
The towering diamond-shaped Courtyard Lobby has pale lemon tones focused around a six column centerpiece.
This are of the hotel oozes class in which to take afternoon tea or enjoy a Japanese or Curry lunch (served daily) in a luxurious setting.
The GPO history of the building in recognised in certain areas. The Post Bar is a popular spot with guests and locals alike and is always buzzing.
Jade Chinese restaurant has huge picture windows overlooking the harbour while the Town restaurant has both indoor and outdoor areas --- the latter with close-up views of the Singapore River.
The hotel's Infinity Pool sits above the outdoor terrace and is a great watching-the-world-go-by spot, especially in the company of a cool cocktail.
For elegant touches of yesteryear and tomorrow the Fullerton is quite unique. Stay a while...it's rather special.
