I was born in rainy Manchester, UK, but made my escape to sunny Rio de Janeiro in 2006. Since then it's been hard to keep me away from the city, although I've also travelled elsewhere in Brazil and South America. I'm a trained journalist and editor and have managed to fund my trips through combining my twin passions of travelling and writing - recent writing credits include updating chapters for Fodor's Brazil, Footprint Brazil and Footprint South American Handbook. I live high on a hillside in Santa Teresa - Rio's 'arty' district, and my one complaint is that I never seem to get time to visit the beach! Despite my lack of tanning time, I love Rio, and and have no intentions of returning to my wet and windy home city any time soon!

Feira Rio Antigo's Belated Birthday Party
With typical Carioca chaos, plans for a street party to mark 12 years of the lively Feira do Rio Antigo have been shifted back to next Saturday, October 10th. The sprawling outdoor antiques, art, collectables and fashion fair tradiotionally takes place the first Saturday of each month in the heart of Rio’s historic centre, but with campaigns in full swing for upcoming local elections, the party had to be postponed at the last minute to allow public speakers to have the run of the streets.
Still, better late than never, and the shebang looks certain to go ahead on October 10th. Always a bustling, colourful affair, next week’s fair should be busier and better than ever, with the street party action kicking off at 10am and continuing until after sundown.
As always, the fair takes place on and around Rua do Lavradio – the first residential street to be built in Rio, and chockablock with handsome colonial buildings that now serve as bars, restaurants and antiques stores. Live music is set to be performed simultaneously at various points in the area, and as it’s free of charge there’s nothing to stop you from wandering around until you find something that floats your musical boat. The first sets kick off at 1pm, with a local choro troupe performing in front of building number 21, Rua do Resende. At 2pm there’s more choro at Rua Lavradio 116, along with a puppet show that’s bound to put smiles on young children’s faces. If fashion’s your thing, hotfoot it to the corner of Rua Lavradio and Rua do Senado, where a music and fashion show will be taking place. There’s MPB (Musica Popular Brasileiro), bossa nova and samba throughout the afternoon, providing the perfect musical backdrop to a day’s browsing for bargains.
