Gladstone Hotel
"The oldest continuously operating hotel in Toronto" sounds like a bit of a sketchy designation to promote, but the hotel built in 1889 really is a very cool place to drink, snack, stay, sing karaoke and take in some culture.
Located on Queen Street West, near Dufferin, the hotel is the place to go Thursday, Friday and Saturday for aspiring pop stars and drunken songbirds alike. The Melody Bar is reknowned for its karaoke and has devoted fans – so arrive early to score seats.
The Cafe is a great place for a midday coffee, lunch, dinner or evening pint. They also serve a great brunch. The exposed brick walls, huge Victorian windows and dark wood bar feel both laid-back and luxurious.
The Gladstone is also a good place to check out Canadian art, with exhibitions constantly in rotation.
Finally, if you're looking for a place to stay, skip the big chain hotels and rent an artist-designed room at the Gladstone. Each one is different, unique and decorated by a local artist or designer. The Biker Room is what else? motorcycle-inspired and Teen Queen is a tribute to the decor stylings of teenage girls – posters of cute boys included.
