If you are a flower lover then the Western Cape is where you need to be. Situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain you will find Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, one of the world's most renowned botanical gardens. It is home to a unique variety of South African plants but also offers a series of walks and hikes.

The Kirstenbosch estate stretches over 528 hector but approximately only 36 hectors has been cultivated. The estate was a gift to the people of Cape Town from British Imperialist, Cecil John Rhodes.

It is advised that you spend a few hours exploring the many well planned walks that surround a variety of plants such as Cycads, Fynbos, Proteas, Medicinal herbs, Fragrance Gardens etc. The garden has been well designed to cater for people who are blind or disabled.

There are also a range of different eating facilities that ranging from café style to a formal restaurant. A great thing to do is to take a picnic along and enjoy it on any of the many rolling lawns alongside ponds or streams.

The gardens are also home to a variety of bird species such as the Helmeted Guinea Fowl , Ducks, Geese, Sugar birds and loads more. The garden is open everyday of the year and during the months of November to April they host the open air Summer Sunset Concerts featuring an assortment of South Africa's musical talent.

If you feel that walking through the gardens will be a bit too strenuous I would recommend that you arrange a Golf Cart/ shuttle tour by contacting the information office a day or two ahead of your visit

We find Kirstenbosch Gardens to be an amazing place to relax no matter what the weather but I would recommend you wear comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen.
