This pensión requires a bit of work. If you can find Mariluz down curving side streets and dead-end allies, and then manage to get your bags up to the third floor, you’ll be the lucky guest at one of Barcelona’s best budget deals. A double room is just €48.00, an excellent value for couples and friends. Unfortunately, a single room is also €48.00, which means those lone wolves don’t get much of a break. The pensión also offers triples and quadruple rooms.
Located in an 18th century building in the Barri Gotic, Mariluz has charm to spare. There are red geraniums in clay pots on the window sills and the staff is super friendly. Sure, it’s a bit on the small side, but what isn’t in the gothic zone? Though small, rooms are clean and orderly. You have to share a bathroom at Mariluz, so if waiting your turn to shower irritates you, then it’s not the pensión for you (there are two rooms with private baths for a little more money). Along with the communal bath comes a communal kitchen, which is also kept spotless. Mariluz may seem like a backpacker place, with all the group showering and cooking; it’s not. This is a quiet family sort of spot, for small groups of friends and couples and it really doesn’t cater to a party crowd
