No. 3: Hostal Fernando

Address:
Ferran 31, Barcelona - +34 93 301 79 39

Here’s a place that caters to mid-range/middle-aged travelers as well as fresh-faced backpackers. This is not an easy task, but Hostal Fernando pulls it off, keeping the pack-clad youth at one end of the building and the mid-range vacationers at the other end.

Hostal Fernando is a family run place which has tried to shake its home-style vibe in favor of a more Days Inn Hotel-look. This may be a boring approach, but it’s good in a way in that Fernando is very clean, safe, and amenity-rich. All of the hostel’s 40 rooms have windows, heating and air-conditioning. The backpacker area of the hostal offers shared rooms and baths with a total of 60 beds at €21.50 a bed.

There are a few communal areas, with framed posters and neon lights. There’s a TV lounge, a kitchen and a few tables for guests to use. While all this is great, the best part of Fernando is its location. Situated on Calle Ferran it’s near a plethora of important historical monuments for sightseers, such as Plaza Real and La Rambla. This is also a touristy area, meaning you’ll pay more for your café than in other parts of town. For better prices on meals and drinks, head away from the hostal down the many cobblestone streets meandering throughout the neighborhood and duck into a small-scale bar or restaurant.
