There’s always time on a vacation to check out local spots. After the tours, the expensive dinners, and swimming in the picturesque hotel pool get tiresome it’s best to leave that all behind and take in a bit local flavor.
A great way to do so is to attend a rock show, you know…rub elbows the people. A favorite of many locals is The Variety Playhouse in Little Five Points. The playhouse has been part of the Atlanta music scene for as long as I can remember (which really isn’t too terribly long) it’s got staying power in most part to the fantastic shows they book.
I find show’s by reading through the free publication-Creative Loafing, flip to the back, you’ll find a full line-up of upcoming concerts.
A dizzying array of performers rock the playhouse on any given night, I would venture to guess that if you’ve got an up and coming or even well know mid-sized artist in your music collection, they have played or may be booked for a future appearance. This week, Robin Trower, Built to Spill, Sia, and a hippie cover band called Dark Star Orchestra are playing…see why the playhouse lives up to it’s name with variety?
On the day of the show, I recommend going to the box-office anytime after 10 A.M. You’ll almost be certain to snag tickets, plus you can stick it to ticketmaster by purchasing tickets without the inflated “service charges”.
The Variety Playhouse serves beers and wine only. Oh they have popcorn too…which I always struck me as odd until I bought some the other night (what does that make me then?).
