MINGEI INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM
Mingei International Museum, located in Balboa Park, provides travellers with a unique opportunity to visit six large galleries. Each one, features effervescent exhibits displaying diverse worldwide folk art and craft.
Opened in 1978, the Mingei International Museum continually displays over 17 thousand objects from 141 countries around the world. Some of these countries include Mexico, India, China, Pre-Columbian, Middle East and the United States of America.
The Mexico exhibit contains work from talented artists and artisans. Excellent religious paintings, textiles, kitchen pottery, metal work, and baskets adorn this gallery.
Pre-Columbian artwork and objects, primarily constructed in clay, metal and stone, offer visitors a glimpse into this part of the world.
The India exhibit displays exquisite pieces donated by many serious collectors. They include, exceptional bronze works, pottery, wood carvings, kites, toys, and paper mache figurines.
Collections from the Han Dynasty to the 21st century can be viewed in the China gallery. This exhibit offers an impressive 1,200-piece collection, consisting of artwork, textiles, and silver adornment.
The gallery highlighting the Japan exhibit represents fantastic pottery, lacquer ware, tools, utensils, prints, paintings, textiles and dolls. Many of the works displayed in this gallery are by the disciples of Dr. Soetsu Yanagi.
Incredibly detailed masks can be found in the Indonesia and Africa galleries, as well as textiles, ancestor shrines and furniture.
In a nutshell, this museum underscores and embraces the artistic works of all cultures in tasteful exhibits.
