Masters of Japanese Modern Art
Over 100 pieces from the extensive Idemitsu Collection of Japanese Art will be on display from September 6th though October 26th at the Idemitsu Museum of Arts in Tokyo's Marunouchi district. The exhibit will focus on masterpieces by renowned Japanese modern artists and approximately on third of the items will be on public display for the first time.
On view for the first time will be "Tomoshibi" by Shoen Uemura, who was the first woman to receive the recipient of the Order of Culture, Japan's highest award for cultural achievement, "Shunsho" by Kaii Higashiyama, another Order of Cultre awardee and "Chokazo" by Denchu Hirakushi , one of the leading Japanese wood sculptors of the twentieth century.
The exhibition provides an opportunity to viewers to appreciate the aesthetics of Japanese modern art, which was gradually sharpened as it was being exposed to Western art from the Meiji through Showa periods.
The Idemitsu Muesum of Arts is open daily from 10:00 - 17:00 (19:00 on Fridays) except for closures on September 15th & October 13th. Admission to the museum is Y1,000 for adults, Y700 for college and high school students, and free for junior high school students and those younger when accompanied by an adult. The museum is 5-minute walk from Yurakucho or Hibiya Stations.
