Montpellier's Little Train That Could
The Montpellier city centre, known here as L'Ecusson, is easily walkable and not all that large. But, if you're looking to spend a few days here and want a quick, fun overview of the city, head over to the Place de la Comedie and look for the tiny white choo-choo train!
The tourist circuit train is 6 euro for adults and 3 euro for children; you can buy the tickets inside the Montpel Tourist Office at the opposite end of the Comedie from the Opera. Make sure to ask for the headset with commentary in your native language (they have English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Russian and Chinese!).
The train leaves every 30 minutes, so it's not like you have to plan your whole day around it or even reserve - if it's full, which it hardly ever is, just grab a quick cafe au lait in one of the many great cafes in the Comedie until it's time. OH, and if you have a big group - you can even rent out the whole train! My friends and I have been threatening to do it for years, and make a whole night out of it. (Call 04.67.51.27.37 to reserve.)
The train makes a circuit from the Place de la Comedie to in a meandering way through the Esplanade, past the Prefecture, out to the Peyrou, down St. Guilhelm and through Place St. Roch before returning to the Comedie.
It's totally a hoot, and you can map out your favorite places to revisit during your stay!
