Offshore Island Paradise, a Short Ride from L.A.
Even with a slack economy, Los Angeles residents (those without the trappings of celebrity status) can still vacation in an island paradise close to home. Just off the coast, and accessible by park concessionaire boats, is Channel Islands National Park--protected treasurelands with abundant natural resources and a wonderful lack of tourists (with fewer than 250,000 annual visitors, this is one of the country's least visited national parks). Although there are eight Channel Islands, only five (Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel) come under the auspices of the park. Begin your journey at either of two visitor centers, one in Ventura and the other in Santa Barbara. It's best to plan your boat excursion, as well as other needs well in advance as equipment rental shops and food stores are not available on the islands. Nor are there any accommodations. Nope, not even a quaint and charming bed-and-breakfast inn. Primitive campgrounds are the only choice for overnights. Getting around is easy--use your feet, a kayak, or a private boat rental. As for activities, well, those are abundant: seasonal whale watching; birding; hiking; snorkeling; and glorious, peaceful relaxation amid a spectacular natural setting. Guided tours are another option, as are a lengthy roster of events including naturalist hikes and interpretive and education programs. For more information: www.nps.gov/chis/
