On The Go: Refueling Spots

Here's a roster of places to keep in mind when you want to eat quickly and get on with your sightseeing. These five New England -based restaurants are dependable, inexpensive and have multiple locations throughout the city.

1
Dunkin Donuts

Starbuck’s ubiquitous green logo is everywhere in Boston, but so too are the orange and fuchsia signs of Massachusetts-based Dunkin Donuts. In downtown, you are never far from the Dunkin coffee and donut that is a daily ritual for many New Englanders. Get a Boston Crème donut for the total Boston breakfast experience.

2
Au Bon Pain

Now national, this chain of bakery/cafés started in Boston in the 1970’s. Au Bon Pain has muffins and croissants for breakfast, soups, salads, and made-to -order sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Note: the chicken tarragon sandwich is an ABP stand-by and the soup/half sandwich lunch combo is an especially good deal. The Cambridge location is iconic, with lots of outdoor café seating under shady trees, and great spot for people watching next to the Harvard T station.

3
Bertucci's Brick Oven Pizzeria

Wood-oven pizza, pasta, and a better-than average kid’s menu. The Silano pizza – chicken, broccoli in a lemon cream sauce is outstanding. The warm rolls come with olive oil and rosemary for dipping. Take-out too. Boston locations at Faneuil Hall, Kenmore, Cambridge (2), and Brookline.

4
Finagle A Bagel

All your favorite bagels- like plain and cinnamon raisin- as well as more unusual offering like chunky vegetable and triple chocolate. Their bagel sandwiches are really very good- try the smokehouse club with turkey, bacon and cheddar cheese. With nine downtown Boston locations, Finagle a Bagel is especially convenient for Freedom Trail visitors.

5
Anna's Taqueria

Boston’s large number of taquerias is in direct relation to the city’s huge college student population- which for fans of Mexican food is a very good thing. Anna’s specializes in freshly made burritos, tacos and quesadillas .The food is made before your eyes- assembly- line style. The restaurant’s décor is strictly cafeteria-like. Locations on Beacon Hill, Brookline (2), and Cambridge (2).
