Peso Drops... Travel Value Time?

  • News
  • Thursday, October 16, 2008

I've long wondered why American travelers tend to overlook Mexico City, a wholly cosmopolitan city that has something to offer every traveler. But with the decline in the value of the peso--the current exchange rate is 13.145 pesos to $1.00 USD--, the unstable costs of fuel, the increase in long-haul travel costs for US travelers, and the generally dour economic outlook in the US, I predict that more Americans will start looking south of the border... not just to resort areas, but to towns and cities in the country's interior that are well-worth a closer look.

In recent years, the peso has been a stable currency, and in the past year, it's value has tended to remain around 10 pesos per $1.00 USD. The change in the value during the past week, reflecting the instability in world markets, may be worrying for locals, but could be a boon for tourists, just as Buenos Aires was for visitors to Argentina several years ago.

You can read more about the peso here (in English). Does the change in the currency's value make Mexico City a more attractive destination for you? Feel free to share your thoughts with me: writingjulie@gmail.com.
