Some German bands to get you started
We all know that part of getting into a culture is discovering what kind of music is popular there. So, put together for your listening pleasure, a list of some of the most influential bands Germany, and Berlin, have to offer.
Sportfeunde Stiller: German rock at it's best. These guys can't actually sing, but the songs and text are fantastic.
Beatsteaks: A Berlin band which will have you jumping. They're a great live show as well, and have been headliners at rock festivals across the country for the last few years.
Die Ärzte: Co-grandfathers (with Die Totenhosen) of German punk rock. The three members also have solo careers and they still bring out albums with amazing regularity. The songs are clever and often heavily ironic and they experiment with new styles and sounds.
Die Totenhosen: Serious punk rockers. Not actively around so much at the moment.
Wir Sind Helden: Berlin's favourite homegrown band. Fantastic lyrics sung by a sultry-voiced female lead.
Die Fantastichen Vier: an early German hip-hoppers, Fanta Vier are classics. Everyone knows "Die da" and "MfG".
Seeed: Berliner reggae/hip hop group with a seemingly endless number of members. Their song about Berlin "Dickes B" is one of their most famous.
Bushido: Berliner rapper known for being a macho chauvinist. If you like more hardcore and abusive lyrics, this is for you.
Silbermond: often put into the same box as Wir Sind Helden - modern rock, female lead, great songs.
