Spend a Day or the Whole Summer in Marina del Rey

Colorful Marina del Rey is fun and entertaining throughout the year, however the summer months herald a bevy of special events, from fireworks displays and boat shows to musical performances that bounce off the boat-filled water. Set between Venice Beach and Playa del Rey, the Marina del Rey community boasts what is reputedly the west coast's largest small-boat harbor, a wonderful waterfront for strolling, diverse accommodations, and numerous restaurants that are especially famed for al fresco seating under the sun and a kiss from the salty air. Entertainment options are plentiful, but here's a "top five" list to whet your appetite. For more information: www.visitmarina.com

1. Free outdoor classical and pop concerts are held in waterfront Burton W. Chace Park, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7 PM, 10 July-30 August. Bring your own blanket or low folding chair. Picnickers are welcome.

2. Every Wednesday through 3 September, 5:30-8 PM, the Sunset Series Sailing Regatta presents a series of races culminating with the "King of the Hill" trophy. You can watch the action from waterfront restaurants, aboard a cocktail cruise, or at the jetty.

3. The annual "Old-Fashioned Day in the Park," 28 July is aptly named. Come and watch ship-model artists ply their art, enjoy the display of vintage yachts and vehicles, and even hop aboard a steam-engine yacht for a free ride in the harbor. Festivities start at 10 AM and end at 3 PM.

4. More free concerts! On the last Sunday of each month, 29 June-21 September, get on down to the Concert Park in Playa Vista to hear jazz, pop, Latin, and other sounds. Again, it's a bring-your-own-seating and picnic event.

5. And, yet more free music! On Saturdays and Sundays, 2 PM-5 PM, Fisherman's Village presents live blues, pop, Latin, jazz, and other sounds. These concerts are year-round, and hours vary by season.
