Stanley's Kitchen & Tap

Since, it is Sunday, I thought I would post a review of the #1 spot in Chicago on a Sunday night: Stanley’s Kitchen & Tap (1970 N Lincoln Ave.; 312-642-0007). Don’t let the name fool you. Come 10 p.m.’ish, this neighborhood "joint" transforms from a sports bar upfront and family dining area in the back, to a loud, crazed bar with a kickin’ band that plays just about any tune for what is Stanley’s namesake: live karaoke on Sunday nights. I have heard your Average Joe sing everything from Ozzy Osborne to Madonna but the band’s most popular karaoke song that really gets the crowd going is Don’t Stop Believing by Journey (probably because it was the White Sox’s anthem during their 2005 World Series win.) Stanley’s is also one of the best places for Sunday brunch with homemade fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese (the best in the city in my opinion because it is crusty on top and oozing with melted cheese on the inside) and Bloody Mary bar. Be sure to get there early - the line for both brunch and karaoke can be out the door and around the corner - not fun on a cold Chicago day or evening. (And beware smokers: Chicago’s new No Smoking law won’t let you puff indoors.) Stanley’s does deliver (if the wait at the door gets too long) and offers most items on their bunch menu ala carte. Other comfort food favorites include the lasagna, mini cheeseburgers and chicken fried chicken. Karaoke, though, is only available on-site and the wait is well worth it. Besides what else are you going to do on a Sunday night?
