Summer is here, Spain just won the Euro Cup and everyone's out and about being merry. (Actually, it would have been the same merriness even if they hadn't one!).
It's also flipping hot. Current temperature is around 30 degrees and everyone's skimpy wear is out. This doesn't effect going out for Spaniards as they work shorter hours in summer and have plenty of time later to drink their beer and sangria in bars that have large terrazas (terraces). Come some sun and almost every bar will put chairs and tables out. But, there are some terrazas better than others and here some of my favourite:
1)Gaudeamus Cafe: Located on the terrace ruin of the UNED building on Calle Tribulete 14, is a stunning open air cafe/restaurant from where you can see stunning views of the city. Cheap, cheerful and very chic -- a must must must visit! (Oh, the name means "let's all be happy" in Latin!)
Closest metro: Lavapies
2)El Viajero: Translates to The Traveler, this place has a terrace outside the main entrance as well as upstairs. Upstairs has lots of plants and candles, truly very romantic. Always full, on weekends it's almost impossible to get a spot unless you are willing to wait a good while. Downside here is that it's a bit expensive and the service is not great. Located at Plaza Cebada, 11.
Closest metro: La Latina
3) Ananda: Located in Ciudad de Barcelona (in rich barrio Salamanca), this place has a great outdoor area, but better for pre-party drinks more than anything. The crowd is pretty upmarket, the decor is ethnic, and it's a little pricey, but a cool place to go.
Closest metro: Atocha
4)La Terraza del Café Gijón: Located at Paseo de Recoletos, 21, this cafe is from the 1900's and is known to be brimming with writers and famous people. So the atmosphere here is classically intellectual, and always full.
Closest metro: Retiro
5)Calle Argumosa: Yes, this entire street in the neighbourhood of Lavapies, is full of small funky bars with terraces. So if you want to go to really chilled out places and have multiple to choose from, this is the best street to go to. These terrazas are also the cheapest you will find.
6) Plaza dos de Mayo: This is another plaza where you will find rows of bars in a square, all with great outside places to sit, eat and have a drink, or 5!
Enjoy!
