The City Park Fountain and the '08 Dem. Convention

There are 69 days left until the Democratic National Convention come to Denver.  Everyone here in Denver, regardless of their political persuasion, feels relieved that the uncertainty surrounding the identity of the Democratic nominee has now been resolved.   In case you have been paddling a canoe in the Amazon for the last few weeks, I can now inform you that Senator Barack Obama of Illinois will be nominated for President by the Democratic Party here in Denver in August.

Now we can get on to more important issues, having a great time in Denver during the convention.   To commemorate it's hosting of the '08 Democratic Convention, the City of Denver built a glorious fountain in its signature City Park using this exciting new technology called electricity.   Of course, I am referring to the 1908 Democratic National.

One hundred years ago, Denver was also the host of the Democratic convention, and the city chose to highlight it's most prominent park with a state of the art attraction called the Prismatic Electric Fountain.    The fountain featured several water columns up to 100 feet tall illuminated by multi colored lighting that were choreographed to music.  I can only imagine that visitors to Denver of the day looked upon it in the same way that today's tourists view the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas.

In the years following the 1908 convention, the fountain fell in to various states of disrepair.   Fortunately, the city undertook the task of completely renovating and restoring the fountain, re-opening it in the last few weeks.

Denver's City Park offers the ultimate in postcard views of both the city and the mountains that is only enhanced by the restoration of it's historic fountain.  When you visit Denver this summer for the convention or any other reason, be sure to experience this spectacular piece of history.
