The Ladies of the Summer Shows

I usually don't associate museum shows with online reservations or lines out the door. This summer, however, several exhibitions are coming to the Bay Area that may require a little more planning ahead. Two shows in particular captured my interest.

Frida Kahlo is on exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art from June 14th-September 28th. This exhibition will bring together hundreds of Kahlo's paintings and some never before seen photographs of her and her family. The show will commemorate the centennial of Frida's birth and will honor the artist through a chronology of her life's work. Becasue of the successful film, Frida, and Diego Rivera's many murals in San Francisco, there is expected to be a huge amount of interest in this upcoming show. The SFMOMA is using an online ticketing system to stagger the flow of visitors to the museum. Click here for advance tickets!  It will most certainly be worth a visit to not only the beautiful museum, but also to join a gathering of devoted Bay Area Frida Kahlo enthusiasts as they honor the life and work of this spectacular painter.

The Legion of Honor presents an equally exciting show this summer. Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzalès, Marie Bracquemond will be at the Legion beginning the 21st of June and running until the 21st of September. Shows that are centered around Impressionism rarely focus on women. Three French and one American living in Paris (Mary Cassatt), were all part of the French Impressionist circle and contributed greatly to the artistic trends of late 19th century painting. This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to see paintings by these four prominent females in relation to one another. Click here for advance tickets
