2.) 12th French Film Festival

June 7 to 17 at Shangri-La Plaza, Manila/ June 22 to 24 at Cebu in Ayala Center, Cebu

The 13th French Film Festival features a selection of contemporary films by young yet already famous French directors and how they portray love and romance in different situations common in modern French society. To be screened are Un Baiser s’il vous plaît, the musical Chansons d’Amour, Qui m’aime me suive, Ma Vie en l’Air, Clean, Roman de Gare, Je crois que je l’aime, Ah! Si j’étais riche!, and La Mîme.

The 12th French Film Festival is organized by: the French Embassy in the Philippines and Alliance Française de Manille in cooperation with Shangri-La Plaza, Ayala Center Cebu, the Arts Council of Cebu.

For the full schedule, call 895-7883 or e-mail info@alliance.ph.

I am definitely going to try and see Brillante Mendoza’s “Serbis” as they’ve chosen to show it as part of the lineup. He was the Filipino director chosen to representative to the Director’s Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival 2007. "Serbis" is story written by Armando Lao and Boots Agbayani Pastor. It centers on a family-run porno theater ironically named, “Family”. The film is a look into the life of a family in provincial Philippines as they expose their human frailties while running their cinema.

3.) Subtext/I Laugh You.

June 14, 7:30 p.m. at the Alberqus Events Place, Capitol Hills, Diliman, QC.

Koine Theater presents Neil de Mesa’s Subtext, a cult classic comedy on text messaging, and I Laugh You, a romantic farce about the psychological foibles of courtship.

For details call 433-7886.

I’ve watched both plays on separate occasions and they are both quirky and endearing. For me, "Subtext" is the main draw as it deals with something timely and very relatable- how to make love last in an attention deficit information age. This is a good balance to, "I Laugh You" which showcases courtship at a time when there was still such a thing. Both plays are indie theater at its finest. You’ll no doubt experience impassioned performances and moving moments.
