Visit a Estancia...
Anyone who has visited Buenos Aires might suggest the city is a bit like New York, a bit like Paris, and yet has a style of its own. Just outside the city, the scenery starts to look a little like Alberta or Wyoming. Well, the gaucho experience is a chance to experience that part that is like Alberta or Wyoming (only with a Argentine flair). So, a fun thing to do while in Buenos Aires is to visit an Estancia. Argentine Estancias are typical local style ranches. They usually belong to wealthy families who have a lot of hectares and converted their estancias into hotels. Most estancias have the choice of spending a day or weekend enjoying countryside activities like horse-back riding, eating a great "asado" while watching some local rodeo show from gauchos, participating in dances, and lots more. The choice of estancias is vast. It depends on what you are looking for, but most of them offer you great accommodation and activities. Some even have spa centres. Most major hotels or tourist agencies can set this up for you. It is a good choice for a peaceful break from the noisy, bustling city centre.
One of the of the best known estancias turísticas is called Don Silvano and is located about 70 kilometres west of the city near San Antonio de Areco. Most of the people that visit this estancia are locals, not tourists, so it gives you even more of the interesting local experience. San Antonio de Areco is a little town, or rather a village, in the middle of la Pampa húmeda. A gaucho festival takes place there the first weekend of November.
Take a look at this web page that is in English, and German too, to see for yourself the lovely estancias...
