the Hohensalzburg Fortress, situated on the Festungberg rock and protruding out of Salzburg's picturesque Old Town is always worth a visit and a must-see for each visitor as it is deemed to be Europe's biggest and most fully preserved fortification. The more than 900 year old structures can be reached by a 30-minute walk, or by a funicular leading up to the fortress from Festungsgasse which is probably the more convenient alternative. Once reached the top an impressive view both over Salzburg's city and the Alps in the distance is guaranteed. The fortress grounds can be discoverd on one's own but in case you are interested in history or desire a closer view of the interiors one of the guided tours is recommendable. The fortress museum and the mediaeval sofereign chambers are well worth seeing. Hohensalzburg is site of numerous events e.g. the yearly St. George's calvacade up to the fortress. The fortres's rooms can also be booked for celebrations in the "royal style" and from May to October romantic night tours are also available upon request.
