Marianne backpacked in Europe long before backpacking had been invented. It was difficult to buy a backpack in those so she used an old one found in the attic. She thumbed her way through the British Isles and learned English at the same time. She...

Look Up

When in Amsterdam it is essential to look up. If you don't, you'll miss a lot.

Look up at the flags

I am quite sure you have noticed the many Dutch flags with dangling schoolbags, books and exercise books suspended to it. You will only see them this time of year. Each flag represents a student who graduated from VWO, HAVO or MAVO, in other words from secondary school or high school. It is customary for the flag to flutter day and night as long as graduation parties are being organised. This means usually two to three weeks after graduation. A second wave of flags will appear in August. These are the unlucky students who failed their exams the first time.

Look up at tilting façades

Don't worry! The tilt is deliberate as it allows goods to be winched to the attic without crashing the windows. No risk of the building collapse into the street, because a law dating from 16th century restricted this lean to 1:25.

Look up at Pathé Tuschinski Theatre

The theatre's façade at Reguliersbreestraat 26-34 is a blend of Art Deco and Amsterdamse School. Study the delightful details and look at the central hall. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 11 am in July and August you can join a guided tour. Just turn up in front of the theatre, no booking needed. (€ 8 p.p., cup of coffee or a soft drink is included. The tour takes 1h 30 mins.)

Look up at Munttoren

Mint Tower at Muntplein is topped with a steeple and openwork orb. The tower got its present name in 1672. The Dutch were at war with the French and English and had to mint their own coins.

Look up at The House with the Three Heads

Keizersgracht 123 is an elegant step-gabled canal-side house with six heads adorning its façade. Legend has it that one evening the housemaid was alone in the house and caught six burglars red-handed. She cut off their heads and put them on show in front of the house. In actual fact the sculptures depict six Roman deities: Apollo, Ceres, Mars, Minerva, Bacchus and Diana.

Look up at Begijnhof

The entrance to Begijnhof is at Spui. This sanctuary was originally built for a lay Catholic sisterhood who educated the poor and looked after the sick. Today it is a sought-after place to live as it is right in Amsterdam's old centre. Look up at the plaque above the door of number 19. It depicts the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. There are more plaques on the wall behind number 32.

This is only a small selection of high-placed sights. Enjoy your Amsterdam stay and look up!

Kids Delight: Wedding Day

When clearing out my attic, I found a drawing I made when I was eleven. (my mother dated all my art works). A bride in a long ivory-coloured dress with heavenly-blue polka dots stands next to a groom. She sniffs at a bouquet of pink flowers. He wears a black three-piece suit. His top hat conceals his eyes. Red hearts dotted around their heads complete the picture.

I drew this when I was deep in love with Peter, a class mate. Hearing his name spoken out loud made my heart leap. My secret wish was to marry him and wear a white wedding gown with blue polka dots. But children don't get married.

The world has changed since I was a kid. Children can get married these days. On Wednesday 9 July BovenNEMO organises Kids' Wedding Day. Twenty-five kid couples will say I will and children champagne will flow. This is romance at its best. The good thing is that that all weddings will be annulled at sunset.

For more information look at http://www.e-nemo.nl/?id=1&s=40&d=1066

Don't feel like getting married? No problem, just watch the ceremony and the party. Raise your glass and wish the newly-weds a happy day.

The festivities take place at NEMO from 12.00-17.00 pm.

Address: Oosterdok 2, next to Centraal station.

Smoking Party at Hotel l'Europe

Hotel l'Europe with fin-de-siecle charm is located right in the centre of Amsterdam. Rooms are large and luxurious and well-furnished. That is what I would expect at € 420 per night. Liveried staff and the red carpet on the pavement will make you feel like a celebrity. Be there on 27th June, not to stay in a luxurious room but to sit on the attractive riverside terrace and watch people blow their last.

Hotel l'Europe organises on 27th June a farewell smoking party. Guests will be pampered. Coctails and tantalising canapees will please the taste buds. Cigars and cigarettes will make the party complete, because from 1st July all bars, restaurants, cafés and discoteques all over the Netherlands will become smokeless zones.

Inveterate smokers need not despair. Smoking is still allowed in designated areas, but service is not allowed. Staff should work in smokefree surroundings. If smokers want to have another coffee or drink, they will have to go to the non-smoking part to get them.

This new law also applies to coffeeshops, infamous for their coffee, famous for mind-enhancing products. Aren't these places meant for smoking? Of course,  they are. But law is law.

Open Tuinen dagen / Open Garden Days

The large back gardens of canal houses are well-kept secrets. Once a year these secrets are revealed when many gardens are open to the public.

In the 17th and 18th centuries these gardens were mainly decorative. They were meant to be looked at not to sit in or to work in. Gardeners kept them in shape. The flowers, plants and trees had to look their best in the winter months because this was the time of year that the owners lived in their town houses. The rest of the year they enjoyed life in their countryside manors.

From 20 to 22 June, about thirty gardens are open to the public. This year's theme is Art in the Canal Garden. Three centuries of art including contemporary sculptures can be see in the canal-house gardens. Some of these art works are part of the garden architecture others are exhibited only during the Open Garden Days.

Tickets can be bought at:

Theatermuseum, Herengracht  168

Bijbels Museum, Herengracht 366

Huis Marseille, Keizersgracht 401

Museum van Loon Keizersgracht 672

Museum Willet-Holthuyzen, Keizersgracht 605

Opening hours: Friday 20 June, Saturday 21 June, Sunday 22 June from 10.00am - 5.00 pm

Three-day ticket: € 12 (all proceeds go to charity)

A special canal boat picks up and drops off visitors in front of the museums and places that take part.
