There are a lot of unknown facts about the island

· Singapore is made up of one main island
and 63 smaller ones…mostly uninhabited.
· Singapore is one of the 20 smallest countries
in the world. America is 15,000 times bigger.
· Other than Monaco Singapore is the most
densely populated country in the world –
with 6,430 people per square kilometre.
· Singapore became the 117th Member of the
United Nations in 1965.
· The country’s red and white flag with moon and five
stars symbolises the following. Red – universal
brotherhood and equality of man. White – purity
and virtue. Crescent moon – a young nation. The
five stars – democracy, peace, progress, justice
and equality.
· The national flower – the hybrid orchid Vanda Miss Joachim –
was discovered in 1893.
· The Merlion – a half fish : half lion – is the
Symbol of Singapore.
· Singlish – the local-speak patois mixing English
with Malay, Chinese and Tamil has two entries
in the online Oxford English Dictionary.
Lah and Sinseh.
· English is the Official Language of Singapore.
The National Anthem though is sung in Malay.
· The world’s first night zoo – The Night Safari –
is in Singapore.
· Singapore is the largest exporter of ornamental
fish with 25% of the world market.
· The Bukit Timah Nature Reserve contains more
trees than the whole of the North American continent.
· The highest point on the island is just 164 metres
above sea level.
· British pop violinist Vanessa Mae was born in
Singapore and moved to England when she was four.
· More Singaporeans are born in October than
any other month.
· The most common Chinese names are Tan – Lim
and Lee.
