Best Burgers in BC

I know its bbq season, and everyone is so into grilling their own meat (or veggies), but I don't grill.  In fact I prefer to go out to get my burgers.  Sometimes its a stay in kind of place, or take out - either way, you will never see me cooking my own.

Here is a list of some of the best places to find a good burger in the city

1
Red Onion Restaurant

Really good burgers, the best kosher hot dog I have ever had. If you want to try something a little different - get their tuna burger. Sooo yummy! And if you are feeling adventurous, add sauerkraut. Sounds not so tasty - but omg its good.

2
Moderne Burger

The freshest add ons in the city. It won Vancouver Magazine's Best Burger Award, and for good reason.

3
Vera's Burger Shack

If you want to have an egg or a slab of salami on your burger - then you are definitely at the right place. This place is known for burgers that can cause a heart attack!

4
Burger Heaven

A place mostly populated by young families and college students. The burgers are huge, and I seem to remember that the beer is cheap.

5
Roxy Burger

OK this is not going to be a popular choice among my friends....who all think I am a nerd for liking this place. While its not the hippest or coolest place (maybe they try a little too hard), it does boast some of the best burgers that I have ever tasted in my life. My favorite is the buffalo burger with feta cheese. They have yummy drinks too.

6
Fresco Inn

Mushroom Burger - nothing else needs to be said.

Coffee's On

MMMM coffee - the drink almost all adults and near adults enjoy (and many times need).  Vancouver is the right place to enjoy it.  There is nowhere else in Canada, where you find as many places to enjoy "the best coffee" around.

I am not saying that you can't find something suitable in Toronto, or Montreal.  In fact, I know you can.  But in Vancouver, great coffee can be found on almost every street corner.  One does not need to rely on Tim Horton's, McDonalds, or Starbucks.

If you need some help finding an interesting place to sit down and savor your cup of java, here is a list of 7 must visit places (many of these have free wifi - in case this interests you).

1
Trees Organic Coffee Co.

Laid back, and bohemian. It's a great place to sit and enjoy some really good coffee. They roast their beans, on the premises - your coffee will always be fresh. Its a great place to people watch in the summertime. But with the construction for the Canada Line going on right now, I would get the coffee to go.

2
The Wicked Cafe

I hangout here 2 Saturdays a month. It's fun, small, cozy, noisy, and always crowded. If you want a seat, you must come early. Because when patrons snag a table, they settle in for a long time. I get there late on saturday morning, and I have never found an empty seat. What keeps me coming back, when I can't sit down? It's the Big Latte. I heart The Big Latte. Get your coffee to go and stroll over to Granville Street, and do some window shopping, or check out one of the myriad of art galleries that reside there.

3
Bean Brothers Cafe

This was my hangout, when I lived in Kerrisdale a few years ago. Its a combination coffee bar, take out food, and pizza place. The friendliest baristas in town work here. I most certainly recommend the hot chocolate. It is so good. Even in the summer I would drink it, once the nights turned a little cooler. There is also a local art gallery on the walls of this place. All art is for sale. And there is usually some great stuff to be found.

4
Turk's on The Drive

A place for great coffee, and the second best cinnamon buns in the city (1st place goes to Gage Residence Dining Hall at UBC). If you are a reader, Turk's is the place for you, because they are the local Book Crossing junction. Bring your old tomes, and pick up something you haven't read before - for free. It's a trade off kind of thing.

5
Caffe Artigiano

Home of the most expensive coffee in town. If you want to know what really great espresso tastes like. This is your new home. I am not sure, but I think this is where latte art got its start in Vancouver. It was certainly my first experience with it, anyway. It's popular, and comfortable. Lots of locations around the city.

6
Paradise Cafe

Like sports with your espresso? Big screens on 2 walls. There is always a game on.....kind of makes it feel like a sports bar. Lots of space, few tables. Think I will suggest that they hold dance classes in the evening. Enough space to learn how to cha-cha. Coffee, is good. Has a bit of a spicy taste. Like they add cinnamon or cardamon to the grind.

7
49th Parallel Coffee Roasters

Award winning beans, roasters, machines, and baristas. This makes it the premier place to get your coffee in Vancouver. Its big, and lots of stuff is always going on here. If you are interested in watching tech geeks feed their caffeine addiction, this is the place to go. I once bought a bag of espresso beans from 49thP and sent them to a friend of mine in France. I honestly thought that espresso in France and Italy was far superior to espresso that can be found in a pseudo large canadian town. I was wrong. My friend (who has a huge love for the espresso), claimed that these beans are fantastic. European coffee has nothing on 49th Parallel. Since he knows his espresso better than I do, I will absolutely defer to his judgement. Anyway, if you are looking to sample the best coffee to be found in the city, this might be where you want to start.

What To Do On Earth Day

Earth Day - The Day (or week) that we get inspired to live as green as possible, and celebrate our wonderful planet.  Here is a list of some of the Earth Day festivities that are going on this week

1
Jericho Park

Evergreen's Earth Day Festival will be held here on Sat Apr 26. Lots of music, and fun (exercise) to be had. It is recommended that you bring a waste free lunch - and if you have a reusable mug, Starbucks will be on hand to pour free coffees. Don't forget your garden gloves, I suspect some planting might be expected of you.

2
Everett Crowley Park

Another Evergreen Earth Day Festival - this time in a really important venue. Everett Crowley Park was once Vancouver's landfill. This is a place that needs care. Make sure you wear clothes that are ok to get dirty - because you will be working hard, and having loads of fun. Family friendly entertainment will be there - as will the ever important presence of Starbucks -just in case you need a bit of a boost.

3
King George Park

Drum circle, face painting, music performance, and bbq are all there to make your Earth Day fun. Proceeds go to the Richmond Food Bank

4
Walk for Water

Walk through the city on Tues morning (Apr 22) for raising funds to provide residents of East Africa with clean water. Walk starts downtown on Robson St, and ends up at City Hall

5
Vista D'Oro Farms

Since its Earth Week, why not go out to the farm and find the very freshest farm goodies available. I understand there is a lot of good stuff there to taste.

Sunny weather is finally here - and so its time to hit the beach.  If you are anything like me, you don't have the desire to pack a picnic lunch - because its way more convenient to just pick something up when you hit the road.

So for those who think like me, here are 5 great places for yummy take out, to eat at your favorite "hot spot" aka the beach.

**Oh please note that some of these foods will have to be eaten at a picnic table - because they don't taste so good with sand in them.

1
Thai Away Express

They have really great frozen foods as well. They have saved my behind more times than I can count. My friends think I make amazing thai food. Shh don't tell them its really take out.

2
Capers/ Whole Foods

They have the yummiest good for you take out available.

3
Cheesecake Etcetera

After you finish dining in the city, why not pick up a couple of pieces of the best cheesecake in the city, and gobble them up, while watching the sun go down at English Bay

4
Solly's Bagels

If you are going to the beach in the morning, make sure you stop by for your morning coffee and bagel.

5
Mr. Pickwick's Fish and Chips

What is a list of beach eats, without fish and chips? Mr Pickwicks makes great fish and chip, in lots of different healthy ways. On the menu - steamed fish, and wheat free soups. Take my word for it, they are tasty!
