At the northeast corner of Plaza de Mayo is the Catedral Metropolitana, the capital's cathedral. Worthy of mentioning is its 18th century wood-carved and gold-plated high altar, as well as main altars on the side aisles. A separete chapel contains the Mausoleo del General José de San Martín, the burial site of the country's independence hero.
