Jump off at Schlesisches Tor if you want to mix with local hipsters. About a quarter-mile down Schlesische Strasse are bars that mirror each other across a tiny canal: Freischwimmer and Club der Visionaire--both hot spots in summer since they're open-air. On the way here, you'll pass inexpensive eateries and more bars.
