Le refuge des fondues

Category: Restaurants

Address: 24 rue de Lavieuville, 18e, Paris, France

Description: Those who have eaten at this rowdy Montmartre restaurant are never ambivalent -- they either love it or hate it. I happen to belong to the first camp, although this may be for mainly nostalgic reasons. The restaurant… is comprised of one smallish room with two long picnic tables running up the length of it; diners (always the ladies) must climb up and over the table to get to the interior seating. Once installed, you have your choice of meat or cheese fondue, and €18 per person covers the cost of one portion of fondue, little nibbly appetizers, a glass of kir, a bottle -- a baby bottle, complete with nipple -- of wine, and dessert. The place is loud and the waiters surly, and a memorable experience is guaranteed. The only problem is that it's mentioned in all the guidebooks, so it is often full of backpackers and study-abroad students. [link]
