Every neighbourhood in Barcelona celebrates its patron saint day with grand festivities. In September the lively fishermen's district of La Barceloneta takes its turn. To start with, a bizarre and grotesque French character by the name of General Bum Bum strolls around the streets followed by the local kids. Then, there are all sorts of organized cultural and sporting events along with firework displays and street parties where people sing habaneras (songs composed by Catalans who went to Cuba to make their fortune). Most of the action takes place around Plaça de la Barceloneta and Plaça del Font. This neighborhood has a lot of character that has maintained its most colorful traditions over generations.
