The Pantry

877 S. Figueroa St. Los Angeles, CA 90017

Overview:

A permanent tourist guide fixture, this restaurant opened in 1924 and has been closed exactly once. It's pure greasy spoon: piles and piles of potatoes, bread, eggs, and animal products about which it's better not… to inquire. It's packed at almost any hour of the day, although seating is easier to come by than during the 1970s and 1980s when lines would stretch around the block. The waiters are almost as old as the restaurant, and are sometimes inclined to serve you what they think you ordered rather than what you actually ordered. I strongly urge you to resist the temptation to come here for post-hangover grease. That always seems like a much better idea on the way there than on the way back. Cash only. [link]
